SEMINAR: DECEMBER 13TH, 2024

The seminar “Sahel and Italy’s Security on NATO’s Southern Flank”, held by General Paolo Capitini, is an integral part of the course Geopolitics for Defense and Security. It will address the geopolitical situation in the Mediterranean and sub-Saharan regions, with a specific focus on Italy’s current position.

Beginning with Libya as the principal factor of instability in North Africa, the discussion will briefly touch on Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt in relation to regional security and their implications for Italy.

Key socio-political trends in sub-Saharan Africa will be highlighted, particularly the renewed quest for independence, as well as Russian and Chinese influence. The analysis will also briefly examine climate and demographic factors, focusing on the generational divide between the population and elites.

In the seminar’s third segment, attention will shift to trends in the Horn of Africa, areas impacted by Turkish expansionism, and the evolving political geography of the Middle East, as pursued by Israel. Each region’s challenges and potential opportunities will be identified.
