Master of Science – until A.Y. 2022-2023
Programme objective
The objective of the Postgraduate Programme is to give future engineers a diverse technical background to be able to adapt to any working environment in every field. The core course contents set the scientific, economic, and technical foundations which allow later on to specialise according to the professional skills required. The postgraduate in Mechanical Engineering to be capable of being in charge of the design and manufacturing process of the products and their use individually or in mechanical plants must acquire the technical skills on:
- Concept, development, and realization;
- Functioning and resistance of the components;
- Materials to implement in buildings;
- Fluid mechanics;
- Process technologies;
- Design;
- Digital renderings of products;
- Measurement and control of indicators and preferences;
- Industrial automation;
- Robotics;
- Mechatronics.
Admission requirements
To apply to the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering you must:
- Have a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering or another equivalent degree;
- Be about to graduate – graduation day before the enrolment deadline;
- Have one of the English language certificates listed in the document “English Language: level of knowledge required”;
- Submit your application before the scheduled deadlines over the year.
To be accepted, your application must be evaluated by the Professor members of the Admission Committee. They will analyse your cv, checking both your academic and working experiences – stages, internships, exchange programmes, extracurricular activities, etc. To sum up, your application will go through according to your previous academic path and education.

Post-admission
After being accepted, every postgraduate student can take the self-assessment TOL. With a score of 60% or more per subject, the student can consider their prior knowledge in line with the requirements needed to attend first-year courses. MSc Programme structure
Year 1
First-year courses are mandatory for all enrolled students and the same in both Milano Bovisa and Lecco campuses, despite the second-year track you might already be interested in. For further information, visit the Manifesto Degli Studi website by clicking on one of the following links:
Year 2
Second-year Master’s students must choose their courses by selecting one of the suggested tracks to attend in one of our campuses (Milano Bovisa, Piacenza, and Lecco).

Horizontal competencies
To graduate, all Mechanical Engineering postgraduate students must attend four mandatory workshop modules to be awarded 2 ECTS for the mandatory Horizontal Competencies course.
The workshops will cover useful topics for future engineers: the mechanical engineer’s rights and strict liability, ergonomics and occupational medicine, copyright, intellectual property, and technical communication, to mention a few.
Each workshop:
- Corresponds to 1 module;
- Lasts about 4 hours;
- Is organised during the mid-semester break;
- Provides a list of suggested text resources;
- Has a multiple-choice test organised by the end of the semester in that students must take;
- Is complete when the test passed.
After being awarded 49 ECTS, students can attend the workshops in whichever semester they prefer since the 2 ECTS will be awarded only after the student pass all four modules. Interest students are free to attend even more workshops but still be awarded 2 ECTS for the four mandatory ones. The calendar with the workshop dates is constantly updated and published on BEEP.
Master’s thesis
To obtain a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, students must be awarded 120 ECTS. The last required ECTS will be awarded after the students will write and present their dissertation during the final exam on graduation day.
The Master’s Thesis is usually written on one of the topics covered in one of the courses included in the track of the Postgraduate Programme selected by the student and supervised by Professors experts in those subjects of the Settori Scientifici Disciplinari (SSD) distinctive of Mechanical Engineering (LM-33) and of the Settori Scientifici Disciplinari (SSD) ING-IND/21. Requests to write a Master’s Thesis on topics of SSDs that differ from the ones mentioned above must be approved by the Commissione Didattica (Teaching Programme Committee).
- A: Master’s Thesis with co-examiner;
- B: Master’s Thesis without co-examiner.
Despite the type of dissertation, students will have some deadlines to meet: register for the final exam, submit the dissertation; bibliography and validity requirements. For further information, check the Educational Rules. The University administration is in charge of procedures and deadlines.
It is possible for a student to write their Master’s Thesis on a subject from a course connotative of a different track, meaning of a different Settore Scientifico Disciplinare (SSD). To do so, the student must fill in a submit the form “Authorisation form to write the master’s thesis on a subject from a different disciplinary area”.
